The New Year is a Time to Get Organized

by Matt 23. December 2011 08:56

The New Year is a time for a fresh start to get healthier, exercise more and get organized.  Start by making a list of goals, be specific.  List what needs to be organized or de-cluttered. Do not feel overwhelmed; do a little at a time.

Regular exercise will keep you healthy and you will look and feel better.

Organize your closet and pack up the clothing, toys, and other items that you do not need, or use and donate to goodwill or charity.  Use containers to organize items that would clutter your home.

Check your freezer and canned goods for out of date items.  Throw out anything that is expired. Clean the shelves and restock by category.  Have a well organized kitchen; reduce trips to the supermarket by stocking your pantry for convenience and protection against an unexpected natural disaster.

Now that you de-cluttered, organized and downsized cleaning will be easier.  Carpeting lasts longer if maintained by frequent vacuuming and regular carpet cleaning.  You can maintain your vacuum cleaner by remembering to change the vacuum belt at least twice a year.  This will keep the brush roll working properly.  Regularly change the filter, and vacuum bag.  To maintain your vacuum cleaner, take it to be serviced every one or two years. To protect your investment have a professional give the vacuum a tune up.

Save time and reduce stress shop online.

How to Choose a Vacuum Cleaner

by Matt 22. November 2011 06:19

There is a wide range of choices when choosing a vacuum cleaner for your home.  New technologies make cleaning your home easier and faster.  The first question to ask is what type of vacuum will serve your needs.  You must consider the size of your home, flooring, carpeting, stairs, allergies, and/or pets to help you determine what type of vacuum cleaner you will need.

Questions to ask:  What attachments come with the vacuum?  Does the machine have filters?  Does the model work on floors, as well as carpets and upholstery?  Is there an attachment to clean pet hair effectively?

If you have a lot of floor and uncarpeted areas, look for models with hard floor attachments that use brushes.  Canister vacuums are light and easy to maneuver.  A canister vacuum is great for hardwood floors, tile, linoleum, and carpets.  For a home with carpets look for a vacuum that has high suction power, and two motors.  Choose an upright or canister based on your existing needs, both vacuums are multipurpose.

Is the vacuum green friendly?  Green cleaning is healthier for the environment.  Electrolux Ultra Silencer Vacuum Cleaner is a product that is made from 55%recycled plastics.  Some features are above floor tools stored at your finger tips; a washable Hepa filters that captures 99.97% of dust and allergens; low noise output only 60 decibels.

HEPA [High Efficiency Particulate air] vacuum cleaners and filters are beneficial for asthma and allergy sufferers because HEPA filters trap the fine particles such as pollen and dust mites from entering the air.  If you own a pet or have persons with allergies a HEPA  Filtration Vacuum Cleaner is important to minimize the effects of allergens and other air pollutants.  HEPA vacuums come in both upright and canister models.

Commercial vacuums are designed for heavy duty high traffic areas and are more durable than an ordinary residential vacuum cleaner.  Most major commercial vacuum brands carry green label certified with HEPA filters.

Proper cleaning and maintenance of your home makes all the difference in the world.  Using the right products for your needs is an important part of your life style.  So make the right choice for you!

How To Clean Your Washable HEPA Filter

by tyler 18. November 2011 10:06

So you’ve recently purchased a new Electrolux vacuum cleaner and it’s time to change the filter. You’re used to having to buy a new HEPA filter for your vacuum cleaner every six months or so but this vacuum cleaner comes with a washable filter. Sounds great right? But how on earth do you clean this filthy thing?

The folks at eVacuumStore have come up with a solution in this 4-Step process for cleaning your Washable HEPA Filter.

Step  1:

Locate the filter door on your vacuum cleaner. On most canister models, this will be at the back of the canister, on the top of the vacuum. On the upright models it will be on the front of the vacuum under the dust cup, just above the base of the vacuum.

Step 2:

Remove your HEPA Filter, and wipe away any heavy dust or debris over a trash container. Shake it out, slapping it against your palm or wrist to release any built up dust or dirt.

Step 3:

Rinse your washable HEPA filter under warm water in the sink. Do not use any soap or cleaning products.

Step 4:

Allow your HEPA Filter to air dry overnight and replace it into the HEPA Filter compartment in your vacuum cleaner.

Washable HEPA Filters should be routinely washed every month and replaced every 2-3 years as needed.

How To Clean Your Fireplace

by Matt 1. November 2011 06:04

Fall is a great time to prepare your fireplace for winter. A wood burning fireplace requires constant maintenance.  Just take the cleaning step by step.

First check the outside of your chimney for cracks that need to be repaired.  Shine a flashlight up the chimney to check for bird’s nests or other animals.  Call a chimney sweep if needed.

Do-it-yourself cleaning supplies:

·         As scrub brush

·         Plastic goggles for eye protection

·         Plastic drop cloth

·         Plastic bucket

·         Old clothes

·         Rubber gloves

·         Wire brush

·         Fireplace vacuum

Remove andirons and grates.  Remove all large debris that will not fit in a vacuum cleaner into a trash can. During cleaning remember that ashes can smolder for up to two weeks. Everything inside the fireplace should be removed.  Open the damper.  Fireplace Tools, andirons and grates should be cleaned outside. They should be washed with a brush, soap and water, and then sprayed with a hose.  If you have brass andirons, polish with a brass cleaner.

Place the plastic drop cloth and newspapers on the floor to protect rugs and carpeting.   Remove accumulated ashes with your fireplace shovel into a trash can.  Vacuum loose dust.  Use wire brush to scrub inside walls and floor of the fireplace.  You can clean glass screens with a glass cleaner.  Mesh screens can be vacuumed.  When all is cleaned put your andirons and grates back into place.

Select your firewood with care. Properly seasoned hard firewood eliminates smoke associated with green wood.  Give your fireplace and accessories routine cleaning throughout the wood burning season.  Use a fireplace vacuum weekly to clean ashes and to prevent dust and soot buildup.

Cleaning Using The Aerus Lux Legacy Vacuum Cleaner

by Matt 12. July 2011 07:07

Aerus Lux LegacyThe Aerus Lux Legacy Vacuum cleaner is a high performance machine.  I have had my machine for years and I am very pleased with it.  Cleaning using my Legacy vacuum is simplified by the use of convenient parts and attachments. Some of the features include carry handle, on/off toe switch, hose receptacle, side bumper, automatic cord winder, power nozzle with headlight, wands, crevice tool, combination dusting/upholstery tool, vacuum filter bag, and deluxe floor tool.

The machine is light weight and has powerful suction.  To operate just pull the long power cord out to the length required, the cord winder automatically rewinds when given a light tug.  To start the cleaner all that is necessary is to press the toe switch.  To stop just press the toe switch again. The power nozzle maneuvers around furniture easily.  If an object becomes caught in the power nozzle, it will shut off automatically.

I use the Aerus Lux Legacy on my carpets, tile floors and hardwood floors. The power nozzle‘s self adjusting action adapts to different carpet heights as well as hard wood floors.  The crevice tool, the long skinny attachment works great inside cabinets, reaches into small narrow spots, under your refrigerator, also to dust off heating vents and radiators.  The Sidekick accessory is designed to clean in hard to reach areas such as stairs, car interiors, bathrooms, upholstery, and mattresses.

My vacuum cleaner doesn’t need much attention but simple maintenance will keep it working and cleaning efficiently.  Maintaining your vacuum cleaner properly can avoid more costly repairs and replacements.  Unplug your vacuum cleaner before performing any maintenance on it.   I check the bag often.  A full bag means that the machine must work harder, or it will not clean as well.  So I change the bag when it is half full because it improves air flow and vacuum performance.  I never attempt to reuse the bag.  I clean the brush roll often to make sure it doesn’t have any string or carpet remnants that will clog up the brush and slow down its motion.

I check the belt and look for worn spots, tears or cracks.  If loose you should replace the belt. I can check the owner’s manual on how to replace this part as well as the filter and other parts that I need.  I had my machine for years and would not buy any other brand.

Advantages of Vacuum Cleaner Bags

by Joe 2. February 2011 12:47

Vacuum cleaners now offer all different styles of cleaning. The most popular vacuums now are bagsless
machines verses the bagged machines.

But what most consumers don’t know is that bagless machines cost more to maintain then bagged
machines, also they trend to clog more often also.

Bagless machines come with multiple filters that need to be replaced every 3-6 months. Which cost
more money to buy then purchasing vacuum cleaner bags.

Another problem with bagless machines is that they are not hygienic for people with allergies. When
you dump the dirt from the bagless machine into the trash the dust goes back up into the air, this will
cause you to inhale the dust and dirt.

The advantages of vacuum cleaner bags are higher filtration, Hygienic, longer life spend of the vacuums
and lower costs of ownership. For example the Electrolux vacuum bags are designed with a rubber seal
to lock in all the dust and dirt when replacing the disposable bag.

Also Electrolux bags are designed with an anti-microbial lining to help with bacteria and germs in
the air. They are very good for people who have allergies and are easy to replace.

Electrolux vacuum cleaner bags also fill all the way up without losing suction. The patented Cyclonic
suction that the Electrolux canister vacuum creates helps the bags fill right to the top.

The average filter for a bagless machine costs $19.99 with an annual cost of between 39.99-79.99. This
is a hidden cost that many vacuum cleaner companies do not tell you when make your purchase.

The average cost for a 12 pack of vacuum cleaner bags cost $24.99 which usually lasts 6-12months
depending on usage. So if you are shopping for a vacuum you should consider the extra cost of
maintaining the vacuum cleaner.

You could save hundreds of dollars over the life of the vacuum cleaner.

Oreck Commercial Uprights

by Matt 27. January 2011 13:18

When it comes to Oreck vacuum cleaners, there are three basic types to choose from; Uprights, Canisters and Backpacks. In this article, we will explore several of the popular models in the upright line of Oreck vacuum cleaners.

Oreck’s upright commercial vacuum cleaners consists of four models, including the U2000, XLPRO14T, Pro 12 Series and Premier Series. Here we will take a look at the two most basic models in this line; the U2000 and the XLPRO14T.

Oreck U2000 Series:

Oreck boasts this model as its commercial workhorse that is used widely in business applications such as hotels, hospitals and offices. At only 8 pounds, this is one of Oreck’s lighter machines, which is a big plus for these larger applications where it needs to move across large areas including up and down stairs. Another feature of this machine that makes it ideal for commercial applications is the ability to lower the handle to a full 180-degree extension, allowing the entire machine to effectively lay flat. This enables this model to slip under desks, chairs baseboards and other office furniture with ease. One of the unique Oreck parts featured on this model is the Metaxalloy motor fan, which is constructed of a material similar to Kevlar. This prevents damage from objects such as coins and paper clips.

Oreck XLPRO14T:

This is the big brother to the smaller and lighter U2000 model. At 19-pounds, the XLPRO14T is more than double the weight of the U2000, however this is to be expected with the 1000 watt dual motor, additional on-board features and attachments package. Also similar to the U2000, this machine is built for commercial use and features a handle that is capable of lying completely flat for convenient access underneath furniture. Some of the additional features on this line include telescoping wand and stretch hose, three-piece attachment set, wrap-around bumper system, non-slip belt with overload protection, easy carpet height adjust and quick brush strip removal. With all of the add-ons and easy maintenance features, this model is a great, long lasting commercial upright.

Both of these Oreck commercial upright models are great choices for commercial and industrial applications. Each of these models has different Oreck vacuum bags and will take standard Oreck parts when in need of replacement.

Keep an eye out for upcoming articles in which we will explore the remaining Oreck commercial vacuum cleaner models; The Pro 12 Series and Premier Series...

Vacuum Cleaner Terms

by Bob 19. October 2010 03:25

Amperage

Amperage is a measurement of electrical current. The theory is if the amperage of a motor is increased, it will create more cubic feet of air per minute (CFM) provided the vacuum is designed to handle the increased air flow. Higher amperage machines generally have higher performance, providing faster and more effective deep cleaning. Household standards may not exceed 12 amps due to circuit limitations.

Automatic Cord Rewind

This feature is generally found on Canister vacuums. It allows the user to rewind the cord with the push of a button. The reel is spring-loaded and automatically retracts the cord inside the vacuum cleaner. This saves the user time when the vacuuming is complete and they are ready to store the unit.

Automatic Tool Activation

Allows for the automatic activation of the tools without plugging in hoses or flipping switches. Simply pull out the hose from its caddie and the suction is on. Some uprights may have permanently attached hoses that require a switch to activate the suction, whereas others may require stopping to plug the hose into a port.

Bagged System

A system designed to use bags for depositing dirt. Bagged systems may be direct-air or clean-air systems.

Bagless System

A system designed to not use bags by depositing dirt into a dust cup. Unlike cyclonic systems, bagless vacuum cleaners utilize a filter to separate the dirt particles from the air path. This reduces the performance of the unit as the filter's pores become clogged. Bagless systems may be direct-air or clean-air systems.

Ball Float Design

Found on commercial cleaners, the ball float design prevents dangerous spills by automatically shutting down suction when the recovery tank becomes full.

Blower Port

With the blower port feature the hose may be attached to the rear of the unit and used as a blower. The vacuum can then be used to blow leaves, debris from out behind appliances, or clear saw dust off of a workbench.

Built In Safety Shut Off

Found on commercial polishers, the built in safety shut off prevents the polisher from accidental start up or running while unattended.

Canister Vacuums

The Canister vacuum cleaners are the most popular cleaner sold worldwide, and is gaining popularity in the U.S. due to the increased use of hard surfaces and ceramic tile flooring in new homes. Canister vacuums work like clean-air uprights. The dirt is picked up with a nozzle, pulled through a hose, and deposited into a bag. After depositing the dirt into the bag, the air then passes through the motor fan as it moves out of the canister.

Carbon Filter

A secondary filter that is used in conjunction with a primary filter, like Electrostatic, that removes odors from smoke or cooking.

Clean Air Delivery Rate

Found on air cleaners, determines how much air the cleaner cleans per hour. The higher the decibel rating the better the cleaning capability.

Cleaning Path

The wider the path, the less passes it will take to cover the same amount of carpeting. For example, a 15" cleaning path cleans up to 25% faster than standard width vacuums.

Common Allergens & Size in Microns

Bacteria 0.35-70
Lung Irritants 0.50-9
Mold 2-20
Pollen 20-50
Plant Spores 20-40

Particles smaller than 10 microns are not visible to the human eye.

Cord Length

Longer cords eliminate the problem of running out of cord and having to switch outlets to finish a room or floor.

Corded Lightweights

These units may also be referred to as stick vacs or stick brooms. They usually have larger motors and nozzles than cordless models. Some models may include motorized brush rolls to improve cleaning on carpeting.

Cordless Lightweights

Cordless versions of Lightweights are often used in the same capacity as the corded versions. Cordless units offer the freedom to move from room to room without the hassles associated with a power cord. Individuals who regularly use their lightweight cleaners for pick-ups prefer these units.

Cubic Feet of Air Per Minute

Cubic Feet of Air Per Minute (CFM) is the most representative measurement in relation to cleaning ability. CFM = Air Flow. The greater the CFM, the greater the airflow and the better the cleaning performance. General measurement is 1.25", as this represents the orifice of a vacuum cleaner under most cleaning conditions.

Cyclonic Upright

This system is designed for use without bags by depositing dirt in a dust cup. These systems use a spinning action to cause dirt particles to fall out of the airflow into the cup. By separating most of the dirt from the air without the use of filters, this system maintains a higher performance level than most filtered or bagged units. In order to insure proper air quality, these systems should include at least one more additional filters. This system will always be a clean-air design and should not be confused with a bagless system.

Decibel Rating

A measurement of sound. The higher the decibel (db) rating, the louder the noise.

Deluxe Clear Stretch Hose

Provides an even longer reach than the standard stretch hose. Includes added strength with wire enforcement, and provides visibility to obstructions in the hose.

Detachable Handle

Generally found on Lightweights, this feature allows the user to remove the handle from the unit with the push of a button to convert the unit to a hand vacuum. This makes the unit ideal for cleaning carpeted stairs and performing other tasks more suited for a hand vacuum.

Electrostatic Filtration

A measurement of filtration found on air cleaners, HEPA is one and this is another. Interestingly, HEPA with air cleaners is not the best overall filtration.

Ergonomic Handle

The molded handle allows the user to clean under tables and chairs without bending, reducing the strain on the users back.

Easy Empty Dust Cup

Generally found on Lightweights and Handheld vacuums, this feature allow the user to detach the cup and dump dirt and debris without removing the filter.

Extractor

Home units designed to replicate the deep cleaning of traditional rental cleaners. Self-contained units hold larger quantities of cleaning solution that has been recovered from the carpet.

EZ Kleen Dust Cup

The E-Z Kleen Dust Cup allows the user to see when it's time to empty the dust cup while reducing unwanted weight and service issues due to over filling of the unit.

Filtration

The higher the filtration, the better the air quality exhausted from the vacuum. This is very important for individuals with allergies or upper-respiratory problems. There are several levels of filtration, which may be referred to differently depending upon the manufacturer.

Standard The most basic filtration system available, usually consisting of a paper dust bag and an outer cloth bag.
Good Micron filters (or HEPA-Type Filters) usually consist of a multiple layer fiber filter that retains pollens, dust mites, and other larger allergens. The key is they may indicate up to 100% filtration of these larger particles, but do not specify a percentage along with the specific particle size.
Better Some units include a HEPA filter. These filters are capable of trapping 99.97% of particles as small as .3 microns that pass through the filter.
Best TRUE HEPA Filtration combined with a sealed vacuum filtration system insures that all air must pass through the HEPA filter before it is exhausted. This system filters not only the air passing through the dust bag, but also the air from the motor exhaust. This provides an overall performance rating for the entire vacuum equal to that of the HEPA filter.

Handheld Vacuum

Handheld vacuums are available in corded and cordless types. The corded hand vacuum typically offers a motorized brush roll, which effectively cleans upholstery, stairs, and autos. Units contain easy empty dust cups, and the corded version generally includes a charging stand with detachable power packs.

Headlight

Shines lights on objects that could potentially be pulled into the vacuum by brightening areas beneath beds or in poorly lit areas.

HEPA Filtration

HEPA Filtration is an acronym for High Efficiency Particulate Air filtration. HEPA filters are a pleated or "extended surface" filter made of glass microfibers. A HEPA filter captures 99.97% of all particles as small as 0.3 microns. For optimal filtration, HEPA filters should be changed every six (6) months.

Home Cleaning Systems

A Home Cleaning System has tremendous cleaning versatility. Not only does it provide Canister suction cleaning, but the power nozzle has a rotating beater brush that offers all the carpet cleaning of a traditional Upright. The power nozzle canister contains two motors; one to create suction and the other to drive the rotating brush on the power nozzle. The power nozzle is attached to the main canister body by a cleaning hose. Extension wands and an electrical power cord drive the motor in the nozzle.

Lightweights

Also referred to as stick vacs or stick brooms, these units are used for quick pickups as a secondary vacuum or as the primary vacuum in apartments, dorm rooms, or other small living areas. These units are easily stored and used. Unlike an Upright, they often contain a dirt cup as opposed to a disposable inner bag. Available in both corded and rechargeable versions, Lightweights can be either the direct-air or clean-air variety providing the same benefits as in the Upright category.

Micron

A measurement of size. For example; a human hair has a diameter of 75 to 100 microns. Particles 10 microns or smaller are not visible to the human eye.

Micron Filtration

Micron filtration traps 99% of all particles as small as 1 micron in size. Micron filtration is not as efficient as a True HEPA or HEPA filtration systems, but this filter will trap a large portion of lung irritants.

Motorized Revolving Brushes

Found on Extractors, motorized revolving brushes use a dedicated motor to drive a revolving brush, much in the same way as an Upright vacuum cleaner. As with the rotating brushes, this works the solution into the carpet more evenly and helps to loosen the dirt more easily than units without brushes. The separate motor for the brushes does not decrease the ability of the cleaner to pull dirty solution from the carpet.

Motor Driven Brush Roll

The brush roll picks up lint and pet hair off carpeting better than a straight suction unit will. This allows the user to clean carpeted areas faster with less effort.

Noise Reduction System

Noise reduction systems reduce the overall noise level of the vacuum cleaner. This makes vacuuming less annoying to those doing other activities around the home.

On-Board Tools

On an Upright or Canister, on-board tools may include a dusting brush, crevice tool, upholstery brush and extension wands, as well as an above-the-floor cleaning hose.

Peak Horsepower

This is a spike measurement of motor power from the moment the unit is initially switched on. Peak horsepower (PHP), while used to rate Canister motors, is a means to compare units within a single manufacturer's product line.

Power Pump

Found on Extractors, the power pump delivers the cleaning solution to the carpet under pressure through spray nozzles much like on industrial grade units. This provides an even distribution of the carpet cleaning solution over the carpeting and increases the units cleaning ability.

Quick Kleen Fan Chamber

Allows the user to clean and service the fan chamber on site, which reduces down time for the unit.

Quick Release Cord

Cord wraps on unit for storage in the home, yet is released quickly with a turn of a lever for use.

Replaceable Brush Strips

Available on most commercial models, replaceable brush strips minimize replacement costs. As brushes wear, just replace the brush, not the entire brush roll.

Rotating Brushes

Found on Extractors, rotating brushes use an air turbine to drive the brushes to scrub solution into the carpet as the unit dispenses solution. This works the solution more evenly into the carpeting to loosen dirt for deep cleaning needs.

Self-Propelled

This system uses a transmission to propel the Upright in both forward and reverse. These systems are preferred by individuals with back problems, degenerative disorders such as arthritis, or a physical disability that would be aided by this type of system. Some contain two motors, one for the power drive and one for suction. This allows the second motor to be utilized strictly for cleaning.

Standard Filtration

This system utilizes a paper bag and an outer bag to trap small dirt particles.

Straight-Air Canisters

Generally used to clean hard-surface floors and above-the-floor cleaning. Most models will include attachments for upholstery, dusting and a crevice tool. Straight-air canisters are not well suited for cleaning carpet because they lack the agitation of a brush roll to deep clean carpeting.

Stretch Hose

Provides a greater reach with the tools for cleaning high ceilings and other hard to reach areas. Units without a stretch hose may require lifting the unit to reach upper window valances and curtains.

Swivel Hose

Usually located on the Canister end of the hose, this feature increases maneuverability of the unit preventing the hose from becoming tangled.

True HEPA Sealed System

True HEPA system vacuums filter to HEPA standards not only for the air passing through the dust bag, but also the air from the motor exhaust. The overall performance rating for the ENTIRE cleaner is 99.97% to 0.3 microns in size. For optimal filtration, HEPA filters should be changed every six (6) months.

Variable Motor Speed Control

This feature allows the user to reduce the suction for cleaning throw rugs or at times when full power is not required. This feature is usually found on Uprights or high amperage Lightweights to prevent the rug from sealing to the nozzle.

Vibra Groomer I & II Brush Rolls

Generally found on commercial models, the brush rolls are constructed of chrome plated steel or solid aluminum with replaceable brush strips. The Vibra Groomer's patented design loosens deeply embedded dirt for deep cleaning and prolonged carpet life.

Wall Mounted Charging Stand

Generally used with Lightweights and Handheld units, the wall mounted charging stand allows the unit to recharge while mounted on the stand so it is ready for each use. This way the customer merely takes the unit off the stand and is ready to clean an entire room or perform quick spot cleaning tasks.

Wattage

This is a measurement of electrical power and current. As a general rule of thumb, amps x volts = watts. Cleaners in Europe are generally rated by watts.

Uprights

The Upright vacuum is the most popular style of vacuum sold in the U.S. and is designed for thorough rug and carpet cleaning. These models contain a motor-driven brush roll to agitate carpeting and dislodge dirt. There are two basic upright designs: the traditional direct-air (fan first) system and a clean-air (bag first) system.
